Aaj Pakistan me aazadi ka jasn manaya ja raha hai aur kal Hindustan me manaya jayega. Lekin humen ye nahin bhoolna chahiye ki is aazadi ke saath batware ke khoon ki barish bhi judi hai. Wo lakhon log jo batware me majahabi junoon ka shikar huwe unko shayad hi koi yaad karta hai. Unka naam shaheedon me nahin hai. Aur wo majahabi junoon lakhon logon ka khoon pee kar bhi khamosh nahin huwa. Wo aaj bhi dono mulkon me garmiyon ke bawandar ki tarah naach raha hai...

Sab bhool jaayen magar ek hassas shayar apne waqt ke jaya huwe khoon ko nahin bhool sakta. Aur uske liye jimmedar logon ko maaf nahin kar sakta.

Sahir ne bahut saare khoobsurat reshami lahze ke geet likhe hain lekin main Sahir ko unke liye nahin chahta, isliye chahta hoon ki wo jahan bhi insaaniyat ko majloom hote dekhte hain uske khilaf ek kaat ke rakh dene wali kassayi jaban ka istemal karte hai. Sahir mujhe sabse achhe wahan lagte hai jahan insaniyat ka khoon karne walon ka girebaan pakad kar baat karte nazar aate hain. Sahir ki ye nazam batware ka shikar huwe un lakhon anaam logon ke naam :

Hi
after reading your emotional outpouring about the partition of Hindustan , some personal memories and anecdotes come to mind. I am from a village in Ludhiana and in 1947 when the mass migration had started I remember my grandpa being asked by our Muslim neighbors who were Gujjars to take them to a camp at Raikot. My Dada ( as Grandpa is often referred to in Punjabi) did not want them to go and I often heard him pleading with them to stay in the village. But these events were of a far greater magnitude than he or most other people could influence. So he did finally take them to the camp and I remember them leaving, their womenfolk crying and men grimfaced.I also remember (I was a kid less than 5 years old) about six months later asking my grandpa as to when those families would come back and his answer full of sadness was that they would not.
My grandpa owned some farmland in tehsil Cheecho Watni district Montgomery (now Sahiwal) and a few months before August 1947 as he was getting ready to go there my father telling him not to go saying " aiss wele uthey halat theek naheen' and my grandpa just sat down on a Manja (cot) and did not get up for a long time.
Later we did get our property re-allotted in a nearby village.
Then many years later in a University class at Harvard, In Cambridge Mass. my younger daughter had enrolled in a Hindi/Urdu class. Most of the students were from South Asia and one day her teacher asked in class as to what the students knew about the partition of India. Some South Indian students said they had heard of it.Some North Indians knew a little bit more about it. But when he asked my daughter, her answer was that this was a topic that got talked about in her household almost every day. And she was surprised as to how little it seemed to matter to others. Her teacher's reply was that it depended upon who was most affected by it and Punjabees certainly were.It affects our lives and emotions even now. Mind you we (my family) were about 50 or so miles away from the closest point of the newly demarcated border. We did not suffer any losses, in men, women,or materials. But I do feel for people who lost their family members and possessions and can understand their feelings. In the movie Maachis Om Puri's character has some choice things to say about this Azaadi and lots of Punjabees would agree with him.Azadi was 'barbadi' for some and I guess, deliverance from slavery for many others. Not going away from Sahir but since you talked about partition, I can not refrain from mentioning the great story Toba Tek Singh by Manto.

For those who have not read it, here is the link (http://www.sikh-history.com/literature/stories/tobatek.html) to english translation which is pretty good but you have to read the original. I had found it on the web once and will try to locate it and post the link.

Harjinderji,
Beshak Punjab ne batware ko sabse jyada shiddat se jhela kyoki Hindustan aur Pakistan ke beech khichi huyi lakeer talwar ki dhar ki tarah uske dil ke beech se hokar gujari thi. Lekin baki hisson ke log bhi kam tabah nahin huwe the. Jinko jitni hi lambi doori tay kar ke Hindustan ya Pakistan jana tha unke liye mushkilen utni hi jyada thin. Rahi Masoom Raja ne ek novel likha tha 'Aadha Gaon'. Gajipur(UP) ke ek gaon 'Rudauli' ke musalmanon ki zindagi par batware ke asar ko yeh novel behad realistic dang samne rakhata hai.

Prabhakarji,
Duniya ki sabse behtar 10 stories chunani hon to main usme Toba Tek Singh ko zarur shamil karoonga. Deshon ke beech khinchi hawayi lakiron se pare duniya ke har kone me aise insaan mauzood rahe hain jinme ek Toba Tek Singh hamesha zinda raha hai.

Hi
Kuchh mera hisaab aissa hee hai ki topic ko chhor kar idhar udhar ki baat mein lag jaata hoon. Sahir saheb ki thread mein Takseem Hind ki baat shuroo kar dee. Haan Manto ji ki kahani Toba Tek Singh Urdu mein, aur translated English mein bhi maine padhi hai.. Yeh merey jaissey Sikh aur Punjabi logon kay ek aissey dard ki dastan hai jo Manto ji Sikh na hote huey bhi likh kar chhor gaye hain.Ek Punjabi ko, ek Sikh ko, apne watan ki sarzameen se kya lagao hai woh to kahani ka main character show kar gaya.Manto saheb ko bhi to unke apne hi samajh naheen paaye.Takseem Hind ki kahanion mein Toba Tek Singh ka ek apna hi darja hai.Aam insaano ke saath jo us waqt beetee woh iss partition ka ek aissa pehloo hai jo hamare leaders ya watanprast shayed sunna na chahen lekin issey ham bhoolein kaisse?
