WOW, thanks so much Asheik Sahib for this truly precious recording. After reading your post I went to the Sanjan Nagar website and tried emailing Professor Raza Karim Sahib about this CD and its availability, but I am yet to get a reply. I would love to get hold of the original CD, could you let me know how you acquired a copy.
Thanks again. |

Hi Manoneet, Following are the word meanings you have requested for. A little late in posting, lekin wo kya kaha hai Ghalib ne ’Huwi taakheer tou kuchh ba-isse-taakheer bhi tha’, tou kuchh aisa hi maamla tha I will post the translation of ‘Khoobrooyon se yaariyan na gaein’ in a day or two. Thanks so much Inaam, ab in ghazalon ka aur bhi lutf aayega. BTW, silsile tod gaya woh sabhi has become my all-time fav ghazal of madam (beating ek baar hi jee bhar ke saza). Jin ghazalon mein unki zaati zindagi ki jhalak hai, mujhe lagta hai un ghazalon ko unhone ek khaas depth ke saath perform kiya hai. |

Inaam, lovely thread. BTW, I have a request. Someone intimated me that Radio Pakistan has released rare recordings of Noor Jehan, especially the 1965 war songs and ghazlas of Faiz. I'm aware that Radio Pakistan has recordings of ghazlas Noor Jehan sang for Faiz in a private Mehfil, somewhere in late 1950s, including 'mujhse pehli si', 'dono jahan teri' & 'aa ke wabasta'- all self-composed. It could be that finally these recordings are accessible. Please check with Radio Pakistan It could a veritable treasure The late 1950s private mehfil was recorded by Professor Raza Kazim. His institute, Sanjan Nagar, Lahore, has since re-mastered those recordings. The first 4 or 5 tracks are Faiz reading his poetry. Then Noor Jehan sings Faiz without any instruments. The only musical sounds you hear is the beat of her hand (some waah waahs from the gathering (inc; Faiz himself), and some horns of buses here and there). Some of the ghazals and nazms were composed by Noor Jehan right then. She also sings 'aaj ki raat' from Jugnu and right afterwards sings Faiz's 'aaj ki raat'. The Faiz version was earlier sung by her before the Partition at Manto's house at his insistence. You can read about that in the article posted by janaab jamalf_akbar, on page 168. In the end she sang 'mundeya sialkotia' obviously for Faiz Sahab. During that song she forgets a word or a line and gives out the most endearing laugh that's to die for. The cd can be obtained from the school, Sanjan Nagar. It is indeed a treasure. I will upload some of it later today. Here is the first one from that evening. Please post your reactions. Enjoy. Glad to've shared it with all of you. The few disturbances are in the recording itself, afaik. I got it from someone who got it from Mr. Raza Kazim personally. If someone here would like to make copies of the cd for others on here, let me know. I'll mail the cd to you. Here's aa ke vaabasta hein. This composition was created by Madam right then and there. some part of history recorded on tape: |

The first four are Faiz Sahab's recitals, five are Noor Jehan's rendtions of his poetry.
Of the film songs, one is a different take on Faiz's aaj ki raat and the other is a good humored dedication to the poet by the singer. Attached image(s) |

Dear Asheik
This is awesome . Listening to Mujhse Pehli Si Mohabbat, this is the best version better than the 1962 film one as well. Thanks a lot for this treasure, I had been waiting for it since long. I'm short f words to express the overwhelming affect. Do tell us all something about yourself .And obviously greedily waiting for other gems. |

Asheik Sahib, I will gladly make copies of the CD for anyone that requires a copy. Whereabouts are you based?
Also, if you have any requests for songs that I can upload for you then please let me know. Getting these recordings is really really great and as Priya, Pulkit and Inaam bhai have said already, words can not express what we feel when we hear these recordings. It's truly special. Thank you so much. |

There are no words to express how I felt when I first heard this too. That's why I'm not saying much. I'll let the art speak. Here are the two versions of aaj ki raat. Did I mention that computer speakers do not do justice to these recordings. groove on |

BTW, Asheik Ji, I sent you a personal message (PM) but it was not delivered. I guess your personal messenger is disabled. I think you can enable it by your control panel.

Asheik saahib:
How do I thank thee? Let me count the ways...but I can't. There are no words in any language I know that will adequately express the sentiments of my overflowing heart. To listen to Noor Jehan sing Faiz in this manner is a truly moving experience. aap ne to subah subah rulaa diyaa! Some years ago, Rajan Parrikar had posted on the Net a 7-minute recording of Begum Akhtar being taught a 'thumri' (ras ke bhare tore nain) by Anjanibai Malpekar (not a famous name but one of the greats of classical music). I treasure that clip as a slice of history. I never thought that one would get to experience history in the making yet again in the same lifetime. aap ne vo kamaal bhii kar dikhaayaa! The human mind is a greedy, grasping thing - abhi is kaa lutf puraa uThaayaa bhii nahii.n hai k Khayaal jaag uThaa - ye puurii CD mil jaaye to kyaa baat hai! I live in Chennai and the likelihood of being able to procure a CD from Lahore if fairly remote. I would be vastly obliged to anyone who would be able to get this CD and would of course gladly pay any associated costs. Thanks again. Warm regards, Abhay |

Somehow I can't find where to enable personal messaging in the control panel.
Once that is sorted out, I can get your addresses and mail out the cd. Until then here's phir koyi aya. This nazm was the sole work by Faiz published in my class 9-10 Muraqqae Adab during the fascist Zia years. The melody composed by Madam is very soulful. Hearing Faiz and others say 'wah kya baat he' every now and then to the song and Noor Jehan hmm'ing her appreciation to him is equally soulful. janab Abhay, I wonder if the thumri that you mention is available to the members here. |
